Virus cases up 2,004; 14 new deaths

More than 92,000 coronavirus vaccine doses were administered in Massachusetts during the most recent day of vax data, while state health officials on Wednesday also reported 14 new virus deaths and 2,004 new cases.

A grand total of more than 4.7 million doses have been given since the start of the state’s rollout, according to the state Department of Public Health’s daily vaccination report on Wednesday.

That breaks down to 2,864,282 people who have received at least one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; 1,675,599 people who have received both doses of Pfizer or Moderna; and 199,717 people who have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

That’s an increase of 92,459 doses from Tuesday’s total. The previous daily vaccinations were 90,144 shots, 55,366 shots, 79,086 shots, 105,458 shots, 112,933 shots and 92,825 shots.

Overall, 1,875,316 people in Massachusetts have been fully vaccinated.

More than 5.5 million doses have been shipped to the Bay State after a recent shipment of 97,600 doses, and 86% of total doses shipped to the state have been administered.

Meanwhile, the state on Wednesday reported 2,004 new virus cases, as infections have recently been spiking. The state’s count of estimated active cases is now 35,786 cases — up from 25,397 a few weeks ago.

Wednesday’s 14 new virus deaths bring the state’s total recorded death toll to 17,427. The seven-day average of daily deaths is now nine, down from 77 daily deaths in late January.

Statewide hospitalizations have declined since the start of the state’s vaccine rollout but have fluctuated recently. Hospitalizations on Wednesday ticked down by three patients, bringing the total to 711 patients.

The seven-day average of the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 has declined from 2,347 patients at the start of January to an average of 714 patients now.

Of the state’s 17,427 total deaths from the virus, 9,018 deaths have been in longterm care facilities.
