- By Rick Sobey

Massachusetts health officials on Sunday reported the lowest single-day count of new coronavirus cases since last March at the start of the pandemic as infections, hospitalizations and deaths continue to plummet during the vaccine rollout.

The Bay State reported 31 new virus cases on Sunday, breaking the previous low of 33 cases, which had happened twice in the last two weeks.

The state also reported one new virus death on Sunday.

COVID-19 metrics continued to stay at record lows on Sunday. After state health officials reported the one COVID-19 death and 31 new cases, the seven-day average of confirmed deaths is two and the average of confirmed cases is 53. Both are record low averages for virus deaths and infections.

The seven-day average of percent positivity for virus testing has dropped to 0.29%, which is also a record low.

The seven-day average number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital — 99 patients — is also at a record low. The 96 patients currently hospitalized is up two patients from a few days ago when the state reached a new low for the pandemic of 94 total patients in hospitals. There are 26 patients in intensive care units, and 10 patients are intubated.

More than 8.5 million total vaccine doses have been administered in the state, and nearly 4.2 million people are fully vaccinated, according to the daily vaccine report on Sunday. Last week, the state hit its goal of 4.1 million fully vaccinated people.

Overall, the more than 8.5 million total doses administered breaks down to: almost 4.4 million people who have received one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; more than 3.9 million people who have received both doses of Pfizer or Moderna; and 274,371 people who have received the singledose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

After the tally of 31 new virus cases, the state’s count of estimated active COVID19 cases has now plunged to 1,432 cases, a significant decline from 36,775 cases in April.

The state’s total recorded death toll is 17,990.
