OFFENSIVE NOTES

-

Jones reverted to the quarterback he’s been most of the summer: one who fires quickly and with terrific touch and shows command at the line of scrimmage. Matt Judon complimented the rookie after practice for how he diagnosed the Patriots’ starting defense during a 2-minute drill.

An example: Jones exploited an exotic blitz on his third snap of 11-on-11s, dumping a quick ball into the right flat to Sony Michel as Joejuan Williams and Devin McCourty converged on him in the backfield.

Later, in the face of pressure, Jones wisely waited for Jonnu Smith to clear an underneath zone defender on a long-developing deep cross and put the ball high and away from a trailing Adrian Phillips for a long gain.

His best series was a 10-of-11 stretch against the starting defense that finished with a high touchdown throw to Smith. Jones started 18-of-20 during full-team drills.

Jones suffered his worst period in the tight red zone, where his reads got cloudier and his internal clock slowed, which led to a lower completion percentage and a couple would-be sacks. Overall, Jones’ performance in that area was on par with how both quarterbacks have performed there this summer.

Top targets in team drills: Jakobi Meyers 8/9, Jonnu Smith 4/5, Sony Michel 4/5.

Drops: Isaiah Zuber.

Michel continues to play like a wellrounded back, even if Damien Harris is still leading off team periods.

Harris did not see a target, and collided during one 11-on-11 rep with rookie outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins, who was slow to get up. Both appeared OK.

J.J. Taylor snatched a terrific backshoulder throw on a wheel route up the left sideline against backup linebacker Harvey Langi.

Nelson Agholor caught all three of his targets during team drills, while Kendrick Bourne was 1-of-2. Mills batted away Bourne’s incompletion.

Hunter Henry increased his participation, but did not take part in team drills. An improvement from Monday.

Third-year offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste repped at right tackle with the starting offensive line during a day of regular rotation.

For the first time in roughly two weeks, the Patriots offense ran a trick play during team drills. Tuesday’s was stopped by Kyle Dugger.

The offense dropped to take pushups three times during red-zone work, after victories by the defense.
