OFFENSIVE NOTES

-

□ Newton took the first quarterback reps in every setting. He went 2-of-3 over an opening 7-on-7 period in the tight end zone, completing an underneath pass to Gunner Olszewski and a backshoulder throw to Jakobi Meyers before forcing an incompletion at Agholor.

□ Jones also took three reps in the period: a soft, arching fade completion to J.J. Taylor, a pass Agholor caught cleanly and then had knocked out of his hands and a “sack” caused by Meyers falling down as Jones went to throw at him.

□ Then, after a kickoff period, it was all 11-on-11s all the time. Newton went 4-of-7 over his only long drive: two intermediate completions to Kendrick Bourne, finding Meyers on a short crosser and a stick route.

□ His near interception, read well by Giants corner James Bradberry over the middle, was intended for Kristian Wilkerson.

□ Newton also had a pass batted at the line and threw a ball wildly incomplete after he was contacted by center David Andrews, who stumbled back into him.

□ The drive finished with a perfectly blocked Damien Harris touchdown run. Harris again led every period among the running backs.

□ Then Jones took over and ... sputtered. His first pass fell incomplete, caused by a collision between Bourne and Giants safety Xavier McKinney. Former Patriot Logan Ryan picked his next throw, after watching Jones’ eyes get glued to Jonnu Smith down the seam.

□ More trouble followed with a batted pass, an incompletion Agholor should have secured against the sideline and an outside misfire for Wilkerson.

□ His downfield aggression leading him nowhere, Jones throttled down with consecutive checkdowns to James White, before a marvelous 40-yard bomb to Olszewski the young receiver couldn’t control through crashing to the ground.

□ Jones alternated completions with incompletions over his next seven reps — including two drops — before overthrowing White in the end zone, hitting Bourne for a score and netting a 2-point conversion on a short pass right for Meyers.

□ Newton and Jones both worked with the starting offensive line during their drives.

□ The Patriots offense ran one more series, a three-and-out Newton started with a hand-off to Damien Harris before ceding to Jones. The rookie then handed off another Harris run and threw a third-down incompletion to Meyers, who tripped on a deep cross.

□ The Patriots deployed their backup offensive line for that possession, with Justin Herron at left tackle and Yodny Cajuste at right tackle. Cajuste replaced Isaiah Wynn at left tackle on Wednesday.

□ Top targets in team drills: Jakobi Meyers 5/6, James White 4/6, Kendrick Bourne 4/5.

□ Drops: Jonnu Smith, Gunner Olszewski, Damien Harris.

□ Meyers and Bourne firmly established themselves as the Patriots’ two best wide receivers over the past 10 days.

□ Quiet day for rookie running back Rhamondre Stevenson.

□ Tight end Hunter Henry and running back Brandon Bolden wore red, non-contract jerseys again and did not participate in 11-on-11s.

□ Wynn and Agholor were both full participants after leaving early Wednesday.
