A man was killed in a fire early Monday in an apartment house in Brighton, Boston firefighters said.

A woman who was rescued from the building was taken to the hospital along with two firefighters, said Boston Fire Commissioner John Dempsey.

“She was on the roof, she had come out the window on the third floor and needed to be rescued right away,” he said.

Dempsey told reporters, “It was extreme conditions that made any kind of rescue very difficult.”

There is no word on the severity of the injuries.

The three-alarm fire on Perthshire Road was reported about 12:30 a.m. Monday. When firefighters arrived there were flames coming from the roof of the house and a second and third alarm was ordered.

“The third floor was ready to flash over when they got there so it was extremely difficult conditions,” Dempsey said.

The man who died was found on the third floor of the building. His name has not been released.

The cause of the fire, which displaced nine people, is under investigation. The Red Cross, Boston Office of Neighborhood Services and City of Boston Emergency Management is helping the affected residents. The Boston Fire Department said in a statement via Twitter on Monday morning, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, and the family during this difficult time. We wish a speedy recovery for the injured resident and Firefighters.”
