Truck driver, 24, dies in Milford crash

- By Amy Sokolow

A 24-year-old Taunton man died late Thursday night when the truck he was driving nearly fell off a bridge after a crash, according to Massachusetts State Police.

At 11:25 p.m., state troopers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash at Exit 50 on Route 495 in Milford, where “they found a truck partially hanging off the edge of the bridge over Route 16 below,” according to the release.

The driver, a 24-year-old Taunton man, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. A 20year-old Berkley woman riding in the passenger seat was transported to Milford Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries.

The truck, a Freightliner tow truck, leaked fuel onto the roadway, which was cleaned up, and the truck was towed from the bridge. The road has since fully reopened.

A preliminary investigation and crash reconstruction indicate that the truck veered out of its lane for an unknown reason, struck the median guardrail and rode up and over it, eventually resting about halfway off the bridge over Route 16.

The investigation is still ongoing, including into whether or not speed or inclement weather may have been contributing factors in the crash.
