Libs Trump up smear of Annissa

- Joe Battenfeld

Like CNN on a slow news day, Boston Democrats and the media are desperate to revive Donald Trump — this time sliming one of the mayoral candidates who has no connection at all to the former president.

Before she even finished celebrating her secondplace showing in the preliminary election, Annissa Essaibi-George took collateral damage because a super PAC supporting her got a half-million dollars in donations from New Balance chairman and Trump supporter Jim Davis.

Michelle Wu supporters immediately piled on to the Trump connection, even though Essaibi George is a Democrat and the super PAC is independent of her campaign.

But as usual there’s more to the story that liberals are leaving out.

Davis is one of Boston’s most generous philanthropists who privately funded a new commuter rail station at Boston Landing and built a $3 million home for marine mammals at New England Aquarium.

And he has supported plenty of Democratic causes — including the EssaibiGeorge super PAC.

He contributed $4,000 to former Mayor Martin J. Walsh, who is now President Biden’s Labor Secretary, according to campaign finance reports. Walsh and other city and state officials are happy to show up at New Balance groundbreakings and openings to share credit.

So does that make Marty a Trumper?

Davis has also donated to Democrats like former House Speaker Robert DeLeo, former Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and former Attorney General Tom Reilly, as well as thousands of dollars to Democratic city councilors from Boston, campaign finance reports show.

Davis has also given $29,000 to anti-Trumpers Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito over the last decade, according to records. Are you going to bash Baker because of that?

Davis was also close to the late Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. Menino knew how much Davis contributed to the city. In all, Davis has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to politicians, political committees and independent expenditure PACs over the last few decades.

But the sneaker maven is now a pariah in certain political circles because he supported Trump.

And Wu supporters are now taking advantage of that to imply that Essaibi-George has some connection to Trump.

It’s bogus.

The reality is she has no control over who gives to her super PAC, just like Wu has no say in who donates to the liberal super PAC backing her.

But Essaibi-George is more moderate than super progressive Wu, so she’s taking flak from the liberal crowd.

And so desperate are Democrats to keep Trump alive that they’ll keep pushing the Davis narrative until the bitter end.
