Gerrit Cole stumbled when the New York Yankees needed an ace-like outing, allowing seven runs over 5 2/3 innings in a costly 11-1 defeat to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

After losing consecutiv­e games by eight or more runs for the first time since May 2008, New York dropped 1 1/2 games behind Toronto for the second AL wild card with 12 games left.

Blue Jays 5, Twins 3 — José Berríos pitched into the seventh inning to beat his former team, Bo Bichette homered in a five-run first inning and Toronto beat Minnesota.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits and an RBI as the Blue Jays improved to 15-3 in September.

Tigers 2, Rays 0 — Wily Peralta gave up three hits in seven innings, and Eric Haase and Dustin Garneau homered for Detroit in a win over Tampa Bay.

Athletics 3, Angels 2 — Shohei Ohtani struck out 10 but went winless in consecutiv­e starts on the mound for the first time since June, and Oakland rebounded from a bullpen meltdown to beat Los Angeles in 10 innings.

Jed Lowie hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th off Raisel Iglesias, and Oakland won its fifth straight.

Mariners 7, Royals 1 — Rookie Jarred Kelenic homered and doubled twice leading Seattle past Kansas City.

White Sox 7, Rangers 2 — José Abreu capped a five-run fourth inning with a two-run single that tied him with Kansas City’s Salvador Perez for the major league RBI lead at 113, leading Chicago over Texas.

Astros 7, Diamondbac­ks 6 — Jose Siri and Chas McCormick hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth off Brandyn Sittinger as Houston edged Arizona.

National League

Cardinals 8, Padres 7 — San Diego center fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. dropped Nolan Arenado’s bases-loaded popup and heaved the ball home, leading to a five-run first inning as St. Louis completed a three-game sweep and extended its winning streak to eight.

Mets 3, Phillies 2 — Jeff McNeil hit a tiebreakin­g homer leading off the seventh inning as New York beat Philadelph­ia.

Dodgers 8, Reds 5 — Clayton Kershaw allowed one run and three hits over five sharp innings for his first win since June 27 as Los Angeles topped Cincinnati.

Marlins 6, Pirates 5 — Lewin Díaz led off the bottom of the 10th with a two-run homer off Chad Kuhl, as Miami denied Pittsburgh its first series sweep this season.

Cubs 6, Brewers 4 — Patrick Wisdom set a Cubs rookie record with his 27th homer, hitting a three-run drive that capped a five-run comeback in the eighth as Chicago topped Milwaukee.

Nationals 3, Rockies 0 — Juan Soto homered to back Paolo Espino, who allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings as Washington blanked Colorado.

Braves 3, Giants 0 — Eddie Rosario, acquired from Cleveland on July 30, became the second Atlanta player in a month to hit for the cycle in a win over San Francisco.

Imagine how upset the Eagles’ coaches and players would have been if we actually picked against them last Saturday.

Hawks rebound nicely with a win over Bridgewate­r-Raynham.

5. CENTRAL CATHOLIC (1-1) –

Back to the drawing board for the Raiders, who were manhandled against St. John’s Prep.

6. LINCOLN-SUDBURY (2-0) –

Warriors controlled the Melrose game from the get-go.

7. ANDOVER (2-0) –

Little bit of lategame trickery saved the Golden Warriors against upstart Acton-Boxboro.

8. MANSFIELD (2-0) –

Good to see Mansfield and North Attleboro putting together a game for the ages.

9. DUXBURY (2-0) –

The names change but the Dragons always seem to find a way to beat Patriot League competitio­n.

Huge statement win against Barnstable stamps the Rockets as a contender in Div. 2.
