Indoor mask mandate issued for Topsfield Fair

- By ALEXI COHAN

Fairgoers at the Topsfield Fair will have to mask up inside any buildings on the grounds, according to the board of health.

“Our goal is to always provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere at the Topsfield Fair,” said James O’Brien, general manager of the Topsfield Fair.

“We will inform people about this mandate on our website as well as signs posted outside and inside the fairgrounds. In addition to requiring masks inside the buildings, we encourage fairgoers to use the hundreds of hand washing and hand sanitizing stations throughout the fairgrounds and ask anyone that is not feeling well to stay home,” said O’Brien in a statement.

The indoor mask mandate was issued at the Topsfield Board of Health meeting on Monday.

The fair will run from Oct. 1 to Oct. 11.

Similar mask mandates have been applied at the Big E in West Springfield, where fairgoers also have to wear a face covering inside buildings on fair grounds. The Big E ends on Oct. 3. Daily attendance during opening weekend reached upwards of 80,000.
