Drug use sites
Apparently, there are still too many politicians out there who still don’t get it (“Pols cite Methadone Mile in drug use sites debate,” Boston Herald, Sept. 28). The larger-than-life and growing encampment down at the relocated Methadone Mile over by Atkinson and Southampton streets has no real connection to the debate over supervised drug use sites.
Thinking we can solve Mass and Cass by giving folks a safe site to shoot up is ludicrous. Also, the encampment site won’t be solved by our politicians who seem so out of the loop.
As I read what Somerville City Council President Matthew McLaughlin said about new thinking on how to solve homeless encampments, I think he’s going in the wrong direction and offers little in the way of a solution to the overall homeless problem. McLaughlin states, “the problems that people fear with safe consumption sites exist right now with no supervision at all.” Sounds good but really not so good.
How at all would supervised drug use sites clean up the mess at the growing Mass and Cass?
If politicians want to debate the issue of supervised drug use sites, do that but don’t confuse issues by tying it to the issue down by the Boston Medical Center area with that growing homeless encampment. — Sal Giarratani, East Boston
