Biden approval rating falters again

- By Joe Dwinell

The Biden administration needs a booster shot.

The polls show the president’s approval rating in a free fall, with his approval rating now at 42%. That’s according to the usually moderate Rasmussen survey, but even the Economist is polling President Biden’s backing at 43%.

“He’s at the cellar level unless there’s a major disaster,” said veteran pollster John Zogby.

“What we’re seeing now is what plummeting looks like these days.”

An uneven recovery from the pandemic, the disaster in Kabul, his generals throwing Biden under the bus over that deadly pullout, natural disasters, the border crisis, dizzying spending packages and a contentious Congress have given the president plenty to tackle.

“COVID, the climate and inflation are external factors,” Zogby said of the forces dragging Biden’s numbers down, but there’s more to it. “It’s difficult to do what he wants with a less-than slim majority — and there’s equal passion in both parties.”

The Economist/YouGov poll adds that 59% of those surveyed responded the country is “off on the wrong track.” In his own party, 47% said America is “generally headed in the right direction.”

Nobody is overjoyed with the state of the economy — 4% say it is “excellent,” 34% rate it “poor” — and inflation was rated as a higher concern than unemployment 28-19%.

“Biden needs a victory and he needs it fast,” said Zogby. “He has very little working for him right now.”
