Car hits house, killing two women

- By Sean philip Cotter

Two elderly people are dead and another is badly injured after a car smashed into a house in Needham, according to police.

Police Chief John Schlittler told reporters that cops received multiple calls for a crash around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Arriving on the scene in the 800 block of Central Avenue, they found the silver BMW had run headlong into a home; the car remained there in the hours following the crash, heavily damaged.

Three people in the car were severely injured and were taken to the hospital, Schlittler said. All three were octogenarians — the driver, 89, suffered “serious” injuries but is expected to survive, but the other two later died from their injuries.

The two women who died were identified as Ann Segal, 89, and Claire Van Ummersen, 86, both of Needham, authorities said. A third occupant, a man, was also transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The chief said no one in the home was hurt.

The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office and police trained in crash reconstruction are investigating the accident. At this point no charges have been filed, police said.
