Revs rout Montreal to notch 20th win

- By RICH THOMPSON

The Revolution became the 15th team in MLS history to record 20 wins in a season with Wednesday’s night 4-1 victory over CF Montreal at Saputo Stadium.

The Revolution (20-4-5) have 65 points on the season with five games remaining, the MLS record of 72 set by LAFC in 2019 well within their reach.

The Revs wrapped up a difficult stretch of four games in 11 days with 10 points (3-0-1). They will go off the grid during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and resume their quest for the Supporters Shield on Oct. 16 hosting Chicago.

“Its was good because it has been a very difficult couple of months and I think the break is going to be good for us,” said Revolution coach Bruce Arena. “We have a very difficult month of October to close out the regular season so a little break is going to be important.”

For the first time this season Arena did not make alterations to his starting 11 from the previous game, a 2-1 win over Orlando City on Saturday.

The Revs went up 1-0 in the 10th minute of a play set in motion by Brandon Bye from the right flank. Bye’s cross deflected off a head to Carles Gil, whose shot was saved by keeper James Pantemis, but right back DeJuan Jones banged in the rebound for his third goal of the season.

“We wanted to get off to a great start in this game and guys were active and we made a lot of attacks from behind,” said Jones. “I remember the ball going down the right and I ran into the box when Brandon crossed it.

“Carles shot it and it just came to me in the right spot.”

The Revs doubled their lead in the 17th minute. Bye controlled the ball down low and centered it back to Gustavo Boa, who sailed it through the penalty area. Adam Buksa went airborne and headed the ball into the net for his 13th goal of the season.

The game transitioned into a 3-0 rout in the 30th minute when Bou’s cross into the penalty area was redirected over the line by Montreal defender Rudy Camacho for an own goal.

Montreal midfielder Joaquin Torres pulled on back two minutes later and the Revs took a 3-1 halftime lead.

Bou netted his 13th goal of the season with a fine individual effort in the 86th minute to close out the scoring.
