Seekonk man wins Bay State million-dollar prize

- By MARIE SZANISZLO

A Seekonk man was one of two Bay State million-dollar winners in Monday’s Powerball drawing.

Raymond Carey won after the first five numbers on his ticket matched the ones selected in the game’s drawing, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery.

“I’m really happy for him,” said Ali Saleem, who coowns Quality Gas & Mart in Seekonk, where the ticket was sold. “It’s the first time we’ve sold a $1 million Powerball ticket, and I just want to thank our employees and tell all the customers to keep playing and winning.”

Carey claimed his $1 million prize (before taxes) at the Lottery’s Dorchester headquarters on Tuesday.

He could not be reached for comment afterward, and when he posed for a photo there, he managed to remain incognito by wearing a black mask that covered most of his face.

Motivated by the game’s large jackpot, Carey bought his ticket at the gas station and convenience store, which will receive a $10,000 bonus for its sale.

A second $1 million prize won in Monday night’s drawing has yet to be claimed. That winning ticket was sold at Bradford Mobil Mart in Haverhill.

A ticket sold at Downtown Convenience in Boston won a $1 million prize in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing. That prize also remains unclaimed. Prizes must be claimed within one year of the drawing.

To win a $1 million prize, the first five winning numbers on a ticket must match the first five numbers in the drawing. To win the jackpot prize, all five winning numbers plus the Powerball number must match the numbers drawn.

After 40 drawings without a big Powerball winner, a single ticket sold in California matched all six numbers and was the lucky winner of the nearly $700 million jackpot prize, officials said. It was the fifth-largest Powerball jackpot and seventhlargest jackpot in U.S. lottery history.
