Man struck, killed by ice cream truck in Brockton

Police are investigat­ing after a man was killed when he was struck by an ice cream truck Thursday night in Brockton, authoritie­s said.

At approximat­ely 6:44 p.m., Brockton Police received a 911 call reporting a crash involving a pedestrian at the intersecti­on of North Main and Huntington streets, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said.

When they arrived, first responders found Joao Fernandes, who had been struck by a motor vehicle, suffering from serious injuries, Cruz said. Fernandes, 54, of Brockton was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the DA said.

The driver of Mel’s ice cream truck stopped at the scene. He is not being identified at this time, Cruz said.

The investigat­ion is being conducted by Massachuse­tts State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth DA’s Office, Massachuse­tts State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruc­tion Section, Massachuse­tts State Police Crime Scene Services and Brockton Police.
