Mishap near South Station sends two workers to hospital
A ruptured pipe in a downtown steam plant sent white clouds billowing and two workers to the hospital.
A Boston Fire Department spokesman said emergency responders were called to the Veolia steam plant at 165 Kneeland St. on Friday morning as steam began to billow. A second alarm was struck by 9:45 a.m., bringing more firefighters to the scene.
It turned out that a pipe had ruptured in the basement, which injured two plant workers. They both were taken to the hospital with injures that are not believed to be life-threatening, the fire department said.
After firefighters got them out and EMS workers took them to get care, emergency responders ordered the building evacuated until the problem could be solved.
“Per order of Incident Command, all members are to stay out of the building. Until the steam leak is isolated, the gas to building is off from outside,” the fire commanded tweeted.
The cause of the steam leak is still under investigation.
The fire department was called to the plant that feeds steam to the downtown Oct. 4 for a fire “on multiple floors in the 8 story steam plant building,” BFD tweeted that night.
