Boston Herald

Throwback Thursday

-

READ ALL ABOUT IT: Before media apps and news alerts, Boston’s Newspaper Row was the place to catch up on the state of the city, state and world, in as close to real-time as technology allowed. Washington Street between State and Milk streets was the core of Newspaper Row, where the Boston Evening Transcript, Boston Globe, Boston Post, Boston Journal, the Boston Herald and the Boston Traveler and others kept the public informed. In addition to hot-off-the-presses newspapers, chalkboards and staffers with megaphones announced the latest. When this May 8, 1945, photo was taken, paper showered from buildings on either side of Newspaper Row after the official announcement of victory in Europe. All traffic was halted on Washington Street for several hours, most stores declared a holiday.
