A woman tasked with helping care for her elderly uncle instead robbed him blind, but she won’t make much use of any riches behind bars.

Jayne Carbone, 54, of Saugus, was sentenced in federal court in Boston Friday by Judge Richard Stearns to four and a half years — 54 months — in prison and ordered to pay back the $493,279 she defrauded her uncle out of.

Carbone was the caretaker for her uncle for more than a decade, beginning in 2007 and ending in 2018. Prosecutors say she “systematically defrauded” him by using his name and Social Security number to withdraw funds from his bank accounts.

To keep her scheme hidden, prosecutors say, she intercepted his mail, removed real bank statements and delivered fake statements to him so he couldn’t see what was happening to his life’s savings.

Once she was finally discovered, she refused to give back the money and made “various threats” against him and other members of their family.
