Brown hired to replace York as BC hockey coach

-

Greg Brown has been hired to replace Jerry York as the head men’s hockey coach at Boston College, the school announced on Friday.

Brown topped a list of candidates compiled by an inhouse committee put in place by former athletic director Patrick Kraft, who resigned on April 29 to become the new AD at Penn State. Interim AD JM Caparro will officially introduce Brown on May 16.

Brown served 14 seasons (2004-18) as an assistant under York before leaving to join David Quinn’s staff with the New York Rangers from 2018 to 2021. Brown spent last season as the head coach of the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL.

“I am truly honored to be named coach and to succeed my coaching mentor and friend Jerry York,” said Brown.

Brown has the proper pedigree to take over for the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Div. 1 hockey history. Brown played scholastically at St. Mark’s before going to BC, where he was a first-team All-American defenseman, two-time Hockey East Player of the Year and Hobey Baker Award finalist. Brown was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round (26th overall) and played four NHL seasons with the Sabres, Penguins and Jets.
