Blue Line to stay offline longer
Construction cart derailment puts work further behind
The Blue Line service suspension between Airport and Bowdoin stations will continue through next Tuesday due to a construction cart derailment that occurred earlier this week, the MBTA announced.
Train service will resume on Wednesday, said MBTA spokesperson Lisa Battiston, who attributed the tool cart derailment to a “complicated area of track in the diversion area” near Airport Station. There were no injuries.
Battiston said the extended service suspension gave the T time to re-rail the tool cart and make other repairs earlier this week. As a result, the agency needs additional time to safely complete the project, she said.
“The MBTA apologizes for the need to extend this diversion, and for the inconvenience experienced by riders during this service suspension,” said Battiston.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has a New York City-based contractor, Railworks Track Services, LLC, completing the track-replacement construction on the Blue Line.
Alternate shuttle bus and ferry service will continue through the service suspension, but riders should continue to expect some delays in shuttle bus service, Battiston said.
Thursday’s announcement marks the second time in two days the T has declared an extended service suspension between the two stations on the Blue Line.
On Tuesday, the agency said service would continue to be extended through this Friday, “to complete additional work and finish scheduled work,” but no specific reason was given for the extension at the time.
