Revs head to Atlanta in search of first road win

Center back Andrew Farrell owns all of the Revolution’s longevity records and he’s on the doorstep of a significant MLS milestone.

Farrell is the Revs’ leader in MLS games (281), starts (278) and minutes played (24,800). He is also the club’s leader in competitions played (308), starts (303) and minutes (27,234) which includes MLS Cup playoffs along with U.S. Cup and CONCACAF tournament games.

Farrell has worn the MLS ironman’s shield since he entered the league as the first player selected in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Since 2013, Farrell leads all active MLS players in appearances, starts and minutes. Farrell played all but 90 minutes in 2021 and has never missed more than five games in a season.

Farrell will get 90 minutes closer to the magic milestone of 25,000 in regular season play when the Revolution (3-5-1) engage Atlanta United (4-4-2) this afternoon in Atlanta.

“It’s been a long time and I’m obviously excited because I love playing this game,” said Farrell. “I feel a little bit more of the bruises and the bumps now, but it’s something I don’t necessarily look at.

“I know I’ve been here for awhile, so it just means I’m getting old. Obviously, the game is changing a lot. I think it’s important to bring the right attitude and to try and pass it on to the younger guys who are here.”

The Revolution are coming off a convincing 5-1 victory over FC Cincinnati in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup round of 32 contest on May 11 at Gillette Stadium. Midfielder Carles Gil netted a hat trick, the first by a Revolution player in a U.S. Cup game, while striker Adam Buksa scored twice. Buksa has scored six goals in the last five games and is tied with Gil for the club lead.

“Adam is tremendous,” said Farrell. “I think each year he’s been here he’s grown so much in his game. We see the goals in the air and he scores with his feet.”

The Revolution are 3-1-1 in their last five games but have yet to secure a road win. The Revs swept the series with Atlanta last season.

Farrell and center back Henry Kessler will need to be aware of Atlanta’s dynamic striker Ronaldo Cisneros, a Mexican international transfer who has scored four goals in five appearances this season.

“They have done a great job in brining in talent, whether it is domestic or from overseas,” said Farrell. “I think Atlanta is one of those clubs that always brings in reinforcements at a high level with guys who can change the game in a heartbeat.

“So, we are aware of the talent they have a very potent attack.” —

Munoz leads Spieth by one at Byron Nelson

Sebastián Muñoz will be the “other” local guy in the final pairing of the final round of the Byron Nelson.

It’s cool by the Colombian who now calls the Dallas area home and has at least shared the lead after all three rounds.

Muñoz shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday and was 21 under, a stroke ahead of hometown favorite Jordan Spieth, who is still seeking a breakthrough at the event in which he contended in the final round as a 16-year-old high schooler in 2010. Spieth shot a 64.

Joaquin Niemann will be the third player in the final group Sunday, alone in third another shot back after a 65. James Hahn almost matched Muñoz’s opening-round 60 at TPC Craig Ranch, shooting 61 to jump 34 spots to a tie for fourth with Justin Thomas (64).
