Hub officer home after stabbing

The Boston Police officer stabbed in Dorchester early Saturday morning is home and recovering from his wounds, according to the Boston Police Patrolman’s Association.

“The dangers of policing on full display yet again yesterday in Dorchester,” the agency said via Twitter on Sunday.

“Today we find ourselves counting our blessings knowing that the officer attacked and stabbed is home recovering from his injuries. To all who risk their lives to keep others safe, we say: thank you,” they said.

Police say they responded to 22 Glendale St. in Dorchester before 3 a.m. Saturday to a report of a man screaming. That man, later identified as Richard Ortiz, 48, of Revere, was found by responding officers in the street wielding a knife, police say.

Ortiz was ordered to drop the knife, according to police, but instead stabbed one of the officers in the upper torso.

Ortiz was then shot and killed by another officer, police say.

Both officers were sent to the hospital, though the second was not apparently injured. The Boston Police Department has been known to send an officer involved in a shooting in for medical evaluation.

“This is a reminder of the dangers officers face everyday and how quickly events can unfold when officers respond to a call,” Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long said shortly after the shooting.

The name of the injured officer was not released. The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office will investigate both the shooting and the stabbing that led to it, according to that office.
