Warm temp records in jeopardy this week

- By Rick Sobey rick.sobey@bostonherald.com

Is winter already over? Don’t put away the shovels and snow blowers quite yet, but it will sure feel like the middle of spring yet again this week.

An incredibly mild February week is expected to bring high temps in the 60s, which would smash recordhigh marks later this week.

The record-high of 60 degrees for Feb. 16 and the record-high of 61 degrees on Feb. 17 are very much in jeopardy, according to the National Weather Service forecast for the Bostonarea. Yet again, the forecast does not include a significant snow event.

Monday is expected to be the coolest day of the workweek, with temps in the mid-40s on a mostly cloudy day.

Then temps should gradually climb throughout the week. Tuesday’s high temps will be in the upper 40s, and it should be mostly sunny out.

“And we’ll keep getting warmer from there,” Alan Dunham, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office, told the Herald on Sunday.

Wednesday is expected to be in the mid-50s — roughly 15 or so degrees above normal for this time of year — with pretty breezy conditions.

Then the warmest temps of the week arrive on Thursday. Boston’s high temp could hit 65 degrees, which would break the Feb. 16 record-high of 60 degrees, set in 1882 and tied in 1910.

Friday’s forecasted high temp is expected to be 62 degrees, which would also be a new record for the city. The Feb. 17 record-high is 61 degrees, set in 1981 and tied last year.

Showers could hit the region later Thursday into Friday. There may be one round of showers as deep moisture works into the region, then another round of showers as a cold front approaches on Friday. There might also be a period of strong winds.

Much colder seasonable temps are expected to finally return by Saturday behind the cold front. High temps probably in the 30s to near 40 with gusty winds are expected. It will be quite the change from most of the upcoming workweek.
