A heavy fire at a Mattapan residence led to $1 million in damages and eight displaced residents early Sunday morning, as the Boston Fire Department’s newest K-9 helped investigators try to find what sparked the blaze.

Shortly before midnight, Boston firefighters responded to the 2-alarm fire at 1553 Blue Hill Ave., where flames were seen shooting out the upper floors and roof.

The firefighters were able to quickly put out the blaze.

“Heavy fire knocked down, companies used a quick aggressive attack from inside and outside working off the 5 aerial ladders and Tower Unit to help contain the fire and keep it from spreading to the surrounding buildings,” Boston Fire tweeted.

Six adults and two children were displaced following the fire. One of the residents was transported by Boston EMS to a hospital with minor injuries.

Detail companies remained on scene Sunday to monitor hot spots.

“Boston Fire Investigation Unit is on scene to determine the cause of the fire,” Boston Fire tweeted. “Damages are estimated at 1 million dollars. The ‘@RedCrossMA’ & the BFD-VAU to help the displaced with housing.”

The fire department added about the investigation into the cause of the blaze, “Rio, our newest K-9 is helping in the investigation to determine the cause of the 2 alarm fire on BlueHill Ave.”

In other regional fire news over the weekend, a Stoughton home was destroyed following a fouralarm fire.

“No injuries have been reported, however the family unfortunately lost one of their beloved dogs,” Stoughton Fire Fighters Local 1512 wrote about the fire at 2351 Central St. “The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the homeowners.”
