Ex-nurse indicted for stealing opioids

- By Flint McColgan flint.mccolgan@bostonherald.com

A Winchester woman who once worked as a nurse at an undisclosed Burlington hospital was arrested on charges that she “diverted” various opioids from her workplace.

Andrea Falzano, 38, was arrested and later appeared in federal court in Boston on Friday on three counts of unlawfully obtaining controlled substances by fraud, deception and subterfuge.

The indictment is short on details but alleges that she “did divert” opioids including hydromorphone and morphine on at least three occasions in 2019 — Aug. 27, Sept. 29 and Oct. 7.

Prosecutors did not request detention at Falzano’s initial appearance in court. In addition to the standard release conditions, U.S. District Chief Magistrate Judge M. Page Kelley ordered that Falzano submit to supervision, not possess or use a narcotic drug unless prescribed, submit to drug testing and to submit to substance abuse evaluation and treatment if recommended.

While the indictment did not list the name of the hospital, a LinkedIn page for an “Andrea Falzano” living in Winchester lists her profession as a registered nurse at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, which is in Burlington. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The next hearing, an initial status conference, is scheduled for April 11.

MBTA Transit police search for assault suspects

The MBTA Transit Police are searching for two men the department says assaulted and “verbally harassed with racial epithets” a female of Asian descent at Davis Square Station in Somerville.

The Department on Friday issued photographs depicting two young-looking men, one appears to be white and the other black, wearing black sweat or track pants and black hoodies, who they suspect of assaulting and verbally harassing a female at the Red Line station Monday at around 5:40 p.m.

Specifically, the two men are said to have thrown a Gatorade bottle at the neck or back of the head of the alleged victim, according to Superintendent Richard Sullivan of the Transit Police.

BPD identifies shooting victim

The Boston Police Department has identified Mario G. Santos, 21, of Dorchester, as the man who died in a double shooting on Wilrose Street on Tuesday.

Police responded to the area of 59 Wilrose St. at around 7:36 p.m. Tuesday and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds in a car outside of the address, which is an enclosed lot owned by a local excavating company, as the Herald previously reported. Santos was in the driver’s seat of the unidentified vehicle, whereas the other victim was in the passenger seat.

Santos was pronounced dead at the scene whereas the other passenger was transported to Boston Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.
