Central Catholic dethrones Masconomet

- By Brian Roach

NORTHBORO >> After being an assistant coach on the 2016 North Sectional championship squad, Central Catholic coach Heather Fusco ended Masconomet’s string of three straight North championships.

Thanks to an all-around strong effort on all four events, Central Catholic came away with a 147.075 over 146.6 for Masconomet

at Algonquin Regional High School yesterday afternoon.

“Honestly, with this team it doesn’t matter where we start or where we end,” said Fusco about finishing the meet on uneven bars. “We are pretty confident all around. They are just strong gymnasts and they never complain when I say we are starting here or we are ending here. They just step up and do what they have to do.”

Rounding out the four programs that will compete in States next Saturday at Algonquin at 2 p.m. are Danvers (146.475) and Newton South (138.6).

Through three rotations Central Catholic held on to a 110.650 advantage over 109.725 for Masconomet as Bella Misiura (9.750), Janey Young (9.575), Greta Mowers (9.375) and Mya Champlain (9.375) scored well in their floor routines.

Senior Cami Rueda came away with a 9.450 on the uneven bars as Central

Catholic scored a 36.550 in the event. Masconomet, led by a 9.700 for Misiura, had a 36.875 in their vault attempts.

“I had a little bit of nerves obviously,” said the UNC commit Rueda about her feelings entering the final rotation. “I didn’t do that great on beam, but our team works through it. We showed off and did what we do in practice so it is fine.”

The Raiders got boosts from Rueda with a 9.725 in the floor and a 9.525 in the vault. Riley Salerno (9.425) and Kallie McCarthy (9.325) scored well on their floor routines in the second rotation. Allyson White (9.300) and Salerno (9.200) also performed well on the beam on the first rotation. Julia Murphy also scored well on the vault with a 9.350.

Rueda combined for a 37.700 while Misiura netted a 38.225 with the top scores in the vault and uneven bars.

“I think it had been really good for the girls with (Rueda) as a leader and for her participating with us,” Fusco said about the senior’s leadership.

For Masconomet, Kate Mugge (9.425), Misiura (9.250) and Young (9.250) aided on the beam while Misiura (9.525) scored high on the uneven bars.

Danvers’ Kaylee Wescott’s Christmas routine had the best floor score at 9.800. Andover’s Gabriella Bresnick’s 9.600 led the meet on the beam.
