A pair of special elections and their respective primaries will be held before the end of May following the resignation of two Democratic House members.

“Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin has issued calendars of deadlines for two special elections to be held on May 30, 2023. The special elections will be held in the 9th and 10th Suffolk State Representative Districts, following primaries to be held on May 2, 2023,” Galvin’s office said in a release.

The House met informally Monday, when they declared elections must be held for a soon-to-be vacated pair of House seats representing large parts of the city of Boston.

Rep. Jon Santiago, of the 9th Suffolk District, and Rep. Ed Coppinger, of the 10th Suffolk, will both be leaving the House to take other jobs. Coppinger will move on to lead the new government affairs office at the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council and

Santiago will head the new Executive Office of Veterans’ Services in Gov. Maura Healey’s administration.

Both men will officially resign at close of business on Tuesday.

The 9th, according to Galvin’s office, is held entirely within Boston, while the 10th includes Brookline’s 16th district and Boston Wards 10, 19, and 20.

Galvin’s office said candidates will have less than a month to decide if they want to run.

“The deadline for submitting nomination papers to local election officials is March 21, while the last day to file certified nomination papers with the Secretary of the Commonwealth is March 28. Nominations for the House of Representatives require a minimum of 150 certified signatures,” they wrote.
