An undercover New Bedford Police Detective was shot in the face while sitting in his car in the city’s Goulart Square neighborhood on its south end, but was remarkably able to drive himself to the hospital.

Det. Lavar Gilbert, assigned to the department’s Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau, was sitting in his unmarked vehicle at Rivet Street and Orchard Street in the Goulart Square neighborhood when gunshots erupted at around 8:45 p.m. Monday, according to a police statement.

One bullet shattered the vehicle’s window and struck Gilbert in his face.

Despite the injury, Police Chief Paul Oliveira wrote in a statement, he stayed conscious and was able to drive himself to the St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was listed by Tuesday afternoon as in stable condition, police say.

Oliveira said that there is no indication that Gilbert was specifically targeted, nor evidence that there is an ongoing threat to the neighborhood.

“Being told that one of your own has been shot is a phone call that no police chief wants to receive, however, I’m extremely grateful that our detective is expected to recover,” Police Chief Paul Oliveira wrote in a statement. “This is a stark reminder of the dangers that the men and women of law enforcement face on a daily basis as they keep our citizens safe.”

“We are very thankful for the outpouring of support from members of the community, as well as the many law enforcement agencies who have reached out. Please keep our detective and his family in your thoughts as he continues to heal.”

Another man showed up to the same emergency room complaining of a gunshot wound to his foot a little while later. Oliveira said that no New Bedford officers fired their weapons

“The circumstances surrounding his injury remain under investigation. However,

we can confirm that neither Detective Gilbert, nor any of our officers, fired their weapons,” Oliveira wrote in his statement.

Boston PD confiscated illegal guns in Dorchester, Southie Police confiscated three pistols — one of them an untraceable “ghost gun” — across two incidents Monday night.

The first bust came a little after 5:23 p.m. Monday when police say officers pulled over a car they say didn’t have an inspection sticker. They said that an occupant of the vehicle, who they identified as Alexander Paniagua, 21, of Boston, had on him a Polymer 80 “ghost gun” with four rounds loaded.

Paniagua was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

About three hours later, at 8:19 p.m., police say they broke up a large group “congregating around a motor vehicle illegally parked in a handicap parking spot.” One in the group allegedly began “grabbing at his waistband” before sprinting away. Police chased the man, who they identified as Titus Christian, 19, of Roxbury, and handcuffed him.

BPD says he had a loaded Glock 22 in his waistband. An image of the gun shows rubber bands and what appear to be silicone wristbands wrapped around the pistol’s grip. He was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawful possession of a largecapacity feeding device.

Police say a loaded Ruger LC9 was found in the vehicle parked illegally in the handicap spot.
