Dighton-Rehoboth softball moves to 3-0
Steady offense paces 7-4 win over Dartmouth
DIGHTON >> A balanced offensive attack helped Dighton-Rehoboth softball claim a 7-4 nonleague victory over Dartmouth.
The Falcons scored runs in each of the first five innings to jump out to a comfortable lead, and a gritty relief effort from Edy Latour kept Dartmouth from ever staking a claim at a lead. The victory helped Dighton-Rehoboth jump out to a 3-0 start to the season and head coach Katie Holmes said a strong offseason and a core led by eight seniors has her team feeling confident.
“The girls have big expectations for themselves,” Holmes said. “We are playing really well to start the season. To be able to have that consistency is huge.”
Dighton-Rehoboth put the first two runs on the board, getting one in each inning. Dartmouth was not prepared to bow down easily, however, as it put two runs on the board in the top of the third, evening the score.
This came after Dartmouth drew multiple walks and back-to-back singles from Hannah Garcia and Kali Pomfret brought the runners in. Kylie Hillier stopped the damage from there, and her teammates quickly re-solidified the lead.
“Hillier is coming back from an injury and that was her first appearance this year,” Holmes said. “To have her come in when she did, I couldn’t have asked for more.”
This came after Latour and Ally Bastiss drew early walks in the bottom of the inning and Izzy Moss delivered a clutch RBI double. A walk of Hillier led to Caleigh Cloonan driving in two more after hitting into an error, making the score 5-2.
This is when Latour would enter the game and begin a four-inning run to end the game. This comes just a day after she geared the Falcons to a 9-1 victory over Middleboro, the defending Div. 3 state champion.
Latour said that entering as a reliever was a different experience, but she quickly settled into the role.
“I felt confident in my abilities to pitch,” Latour said. “I was a little nervous going into it as I had not pitched in relief yet this year, but I think I did pretty well.”
Camryn Cloonan would smack a deep home run to left field to lead off the bottom of the inning, something she said was a result of her aggressive approach heading into the at-bat.
“I was going after the ball,” Cloonan said. “We needed some runs; we needed some insurance. We needed something to get it going and I was up first.”
The Falcons would add another in the fifth and Dartmouth would add two in the fifth as well. However, that would be the extent of the scoring as Latour shut it down to seal the victory.
“We’ve worked hard in the offseason, and it feels like it has all come together,” Cloonan said. “We have a strong upper class and are working hard as a team together.”
