LINDSAY, Betty King (Lowell)

-

On the cusp of her 90th birthday, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2022 of heart failure.

Betty was born in 1932 in Greenville, Maine to Edwin H. Lowell, the Dean of Game Wardens, and Ethel Lowell, a homemaker. A precocious child with many innate abilities, at the age of 17, she entered a national Vogue Magazine contest, where she was required to craft a three-piece suit. Naturally, she won. This attention to detail would appear again later when she moved to Boston around the age of 30. She was one of the first employees at ADP and rose from keypunch operator to Major Account Manager in the 37 years that she worked there. Betty was a true professional, always fussing over the pleats in her suits and flying out to her car in the morning, only to return 5 minutes after she left to retrieve her forgotten eyeglasses and then depart again. She enjoyed her work immensely. Betty was musically inclined and had a beautiful singing voice. Around the age of 38, she surprisingly auditioned and was cast for a Boston production of The Chinese and Dr. Fish. While the play was largely panned, Betty was singly praised for the authenticity of her performance.

For over 50 years, Betty was an active member of the United Parish Church in Brookline, MA, helping to establish the church thrift store, the youth program, volunteering in the Hearts and Hands care group, as well as being a bell ringer. The community she found there was a deep source of strength and joy for her and served to solidify her lifelong faith. Upon her retirement from ADP, she made a solo journey to Antarctica, a dream finally realized when she had the time. Never one to sit still, she held a number of post-retirement jobs to keep busy, always working with people, adding her sense of fun wherever she went. Betty also found the time to provide loving support to those in her social circle and her neighborhood, driving people to doctor appointments, doing their grocery shopping, taking care of pets. She was admired by those closest to her as among the kindest and best of souls, always giving selflessly of her time and attention. She was fiercely independent and full of life right up until the end. She will be deeply missed by the countless people whose lives she touched.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lionel Lindsay; her sister, Eleanor DeRubeis; her daughter, Cynthia Heal; and her, son, Bruce Heal. She is survived by her daughters, Christina Martin and her husband, Chris Martin, Carol King and her partner, David

Selib, Marilyn Cook, Elizabeth King and her husband, James King; her nieces, Lorraine Hayes and Katherine Stordy; her nephew, Richard Roderick; and her many grandchildren; and greatgrandchildren.

A Celebration of her Life will be announced at a later date.

Donations may be made in her name to the United Parish of Brookline, 210 Harvard Ave., Brookline, MA 02446.
