Hingham native Matty Beniers is the 13th player with NCAA ties to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. The No. 2 overall pick in 2021 by the expansion Kraken, Beniers spent two seasons at the University of Michigan before debuting with Seattle before the end of its inaugural season. He’s also the first Michigan alum to claim the Calder. Only two schools (Cornell and Wisconsin) have produced more than one Calder winner.
