Dear Reader,
Thank you for supporting local, independent journalism.
Your support enables us to cover the news with the depth, expertise, and urgency our community has relied on from The Boston Globe for the past 151 years. We are inspired by the conversations and actions that have been ignited by our coverage of breaking stories, and the perspective and insights that have come from our columns and investigations.
We recently published one of our most robust investigative projects to date, an eight-part series and original podcast examining the 1989 Charles and Carol Stuart shooting, with over 250 interviews that uncovered untold facts and forgotten testimony about a brutal murder that was initially pinned on a Black man. This was contextualized with Boston’s history and the lasting impact the shooting and investigation have had on our communities, especially Mission Hill. Our work inspired Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu to issue a formal apology to the families involved.
Our globally regarded Spotlight team unleashed several powerful projects — including a riveting series on the Massachusetts housing crisis, an exploration of why governments punish women whose infants die while sleeping, and an examination of the treatment of children with autism in state residential schools.
Our journalists and photographers responded to a tragic mass murder in Lewiston, Maine, revealing how so many warning signs were repeatedly ignored, while honoring the stories of the dead and of the survivors and humanizing their grief and resilience.
We explored the incompetence at the MBTA that has caused so many disruptions to commuters. We also found creative ways to contextualize the slow zones on the MBTA and their impact on daily life, ultimately naming MBTA commuters Bostonians of the Year.
Our Globe Opinion team has prompted readers to consider sustainable fashion and has given teens across the country a platform in a Sunday Ideas feature, providing us with invaluable insight (and new words) from the next generation.
We’ve added more reporters to cover climate, housing, higher education, and addiction. Readers were hungry for more business coverage, and we delivered. We expanded our innovation, technology, and health care beats. Our annual Tech Power Players list shines a spotlight on the tremendous business development happening in our region, strengthening our local economy. We listen to and help advocate for our readers. The Fine Print column, now in its sixth year, has helped frustrated consumers recover $1.2 million.
We have invested in more quality regional coverage, growing our Rhode Island bureau and launching a New Hampshire bureau. We formed a new regional team covering areas North, South, and West of Boston and we have expanded our coverage in Cambridge and Somerville.
This year, our commitment to continuously improve your subscriber experience can be best seen with the enhanced multimedia options we added. As part of your subscription, you have free access on globe.com to our daily TV show airing on NESN, Boston Globe Today. This news program gives you an in-depth look at the biggest stories directly from the journalists reporting on them, bringing our reporting to life. This award-winning show is filmed daily in our beautiful, state-of-the-art studio in our Boston headquarters. We also added to our podcasts with Say More, letting you hear directly from some of the region’s most interesting leaders. We’ve also created more curated newsletters, including one in both English and Spanish, ¡Mira!.
We are proud to bring our journalism directly into the communities we serve and are honored to provide media support to local nonprofits and small businesses. Our Globe Events team continues to bring our journalism to life with events, summits, film festivals, and more. We strengthened our support for our neighbors in need through the Boston Globe Foundation, which supports arts, literacy, education, and families. The foundation’s longest running and hugely impactful initiative, Globe Santa, delivered holiday gift boxes with books, toys, and warm winter gear directly to nearly 30,000 children in need across Massachusetts this holiday season.
Looking ahead, in 2024 you will see how we continue to invest in our journalism and products to better serve you. Some of what you can expect:
• We are going deeper with a new weather initiative and will enhance our climate coverage.
• You will see more games and puzzles, enhanced and easily found.
• This election year, our politics team and Opinion columnists will have a physical presence across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, D.C., and at important election stops across the country.
• We’ll continue examining solutions on K-12 education with The Great Divide.
• We’ll explore root causes and solutions on the wealth gap with our newly launched Money, Power, and Inequality team.
• We’ll continue to invest in new beats and investigations, and will strive to bring you the best possible experience each and every day.
• You will be able to conveniently enjoy the news, games, weather, and reviews on a new and enhanced mobile app, launching soon.
This work only happens because of readers like you. I am proud to be part of this community and feel lucky to work with such inspiring colleagues at an institution that strengthens Boston and New England. On behalf of the nearly 1,000 individuals working to create and deliver The Boston Globe each day, it is our honor to serve you and our community.
Thank you for your readership and support,
Sincerely,
Linda Henry CEO, Boston Globe Media
