Of Braintree, formerly of Norwood, passed away peacefully on January 3,2024, at the age of 89, transition­ing to the Great Pipe Shop in the Sky. Born in Roxbury, Fred was the cherished son of the late Angus J. and Jeannette (Dwyer) MacDonnell.

A devoted family man, Fred was the beloved husband of Sylvia (Boisvert) MacDonnell, having celebrated their 60th wedding anniversar­y in Oct. 2023. His loving legacy continues through his children: Frederick MacDonnell and his wife Liz of Texas, Michael MacDonnell and his wife Wendy of Pembroke, and Carol McDonough and her husband Tom of Braintree. Fred was the proud and devoted brother of Barbara Lynch of Weymouth, “Brother” of Charlie

Ash of Walpole and he is predecease­d by his sisters; Jean Costello, Sr. Mary Grace MacDonnell, O.S.F., Sr. Paula Marie MacDonnell, O.S.F., and Marjorie Brennan.

Fred multiplied his love when he became a pepere to his grandchild­ren; Conner, Hunter, Chase, Hayse, Grant, Molly, Jack, Kevin, and Maggie, and he was a delighted great-grandfathe­r to Amberlynn. His love, warmth, and generosity also touched his many loving nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Cathedral High

School, Fred went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of Sprinkler Fitters Local

#550, dedicating 39 years to the union before retiring in 1995. He served as a past President of local #550. During his tenure as president, he served on the negotiatin­g committee, graduated from the United Associatio­n’s Instructor Training Program at Purdue University, and became an apprentice training instructor.

Relatives and friends are respectful­ly invited to attend Memorial Visiting Hours on Wednesday, January 10th, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Cartwright­Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., Braintree. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 11th, at 11:30 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 850 Washington St., Braintree. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributi­ons may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452.
