McCARTHY, Mary C.

-

On January 1, 2024, Mary C. McCarthy died peacefully, at home, after a brief illness. She was 88 years old.

Most recently a resident of Fox Hill Village in Westwood, Massachusetts, Mary was a 50-year resident of Wellesley Hills, where she raised her family.

She is survived by her children, ML McCarthy of New York City, John J. McCarthy III of Shelburne Falls, MA, and Christina Kepple of New York City; her youngest son, James, passed away in 2019.

Mary was also a grandmother to her adored Isabel and Kate McCarthy and Grace Kepple.

Mary was predeceased by her sister, Anne Hodgdon; her mother Rachel C. Morley; and her father, James S. “Fiddle” Morley. Her father, Fiddle, is described in the Pro Basketball Encyclopedia as the, “Most prominent figure in Boston Basketball for over two decades.”

She was a graduate of Saint

Elizabeth University in Morristown, NJ.

Mary spent her summers in Nantucket and took great pride in being a Sankaty Head Golf Club Member for over 35 years. Well known for her impeccable style, grace and elegance, Mary was charm personified. Eternally optimistic, she cherished spending time with her family and friends and her warmth, empathy and kindness was widely felt.

She was endlessly curious and loved entertaining, travel, museums, reading and golf.

While raising her children, she became a “mom” to the many and varied kids who circulated through her Wellesley home. Everyone was welcome to stay, and she was the “No judgement, go to mom” when shenanigans arose. Mrs. McC was the best!

Mary spent the past 3 years at Fox Hill Village, where she was an active member in a loving and convivial community. She cherished her time there, being surrounded by a caring, happy and supportive family of residents and caregivers.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be announced in the spring.
