URQUHART, Wayne

-

Of Ashland, Massachusetts, died on December 21, 2023. Wayne led a life, with his late wife, Holly (Thayer), of adventure, romance, and service. Leaving in his wake, wonderful memories, and especially many, many friendships.

Wayne was born May 23,1945 in Boston. He was one of 3 sons of Henry and Marie Urquhart. His death was preceded by his brother, Bruce; and is survived by his brother, Don of South Easton, MA.

Wayne grew up in Needham, MA and attended Don Bosco High School, where he was best known as a fierce linebacker. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper. He deployed during the Cuban Missile Crisis and participated in the integration of the University of Mississippi providing protection for integrating students.

His lifelong passion was as a jazz drummer, playing gigs around New England, when work permitted.

Wayne joined the Needham Police Department and served as a Sergeant and, eventually, Prosecutor for the Dedham Court. Upon retirement, he and Holly bought a 38-foot sloop, where they lived and sailed for several years in Florida, the Bahamas and Charleston. He participated in several Newport to Bermuda races. A lifelong athlete, he was still able to run several marathons, including Boston and Chicago, up until a lung condition slowed him down.

Once retired, Holly and Wayne moved to Ashland, but Wayne’s sense of service took hold and he volunteered to go to Haiti as part of a UN initiative to reconstitute the local police forces.

Wayne served as a firearms instructor. Holly’s death in 2021 was a devastating loss to Wayne, who simply adored her.

He will be missed by his many friends, for his loyal companionship.
