STAUNTON, John Patrick

Cherished husband, adored father, doting grandfathe­r, loving brother and exemplary friend, passed away on April 2, 2024. He was 84 years old.

He was born on May 22, 1939 in Boston, Massachuse­tts, to the late James and Mary (Walsh) Staunton.

As a young boy, John moved to Milton from Dorchester and he later graduated from Boston College High School, in 1956, as “Mr. Basketball” and went on to Providence College as an outstandin­g basketball player. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, having served two years on USS Boston in the Mediterran­ean.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary E. (Gallagher). They raised their family in Cohasset, where John coached little league baseball, youth basketball, youth soccer and was a longtime active member of Cohasset Golf Club. He leaves his daughters, Caitlin (Paul) Appleton of Cohasset and Megan (Frank) Selinger of Cohasset; and his son, John, Jr. (Jessica) Staunton of Wellesley. John was preceded in death by his beloved son, James M. Staunton; and his siblings, Richard M. Staunton (Carol) and Maureen Crowley (Brian); and is survived by James T. Staunton (Elaine) of Weymouth, Paul Staunton (Elizabeth) of Scituate and Robert Staunton of Sandwich. He dearly loved and was proud of his nine grandchild­ren, Emily, James, Liam and John Appleton, Dominic and Mary Linda Staunton, Colin, Claire and Eamon Selinger.

For 58 years, he had a successful career as a stock broker, starting in the Merrill Lynch training program and retiring as a Vice President of Tucker Anthony Wealth Management.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, on Monday, April 8, at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 2 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting Hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, on Sunday, April 7, in the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer Street, COHASSET, MA. Interment at a later date.
