South Burlington is putting in a school zone traffic area for a portion of Dorset Street.

The busy thoroughfare runs by the campuses of South Burlington High School and Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School.

Motorists should be aware the school zone instates a speed limit of 25 miles per hour from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. during school days. Among the new signs and lights will be a radar and electronic sign to alert drivers to their current speed.

The equipment is expected to be installed early in the summer by the Department of Public Works, according to the City of South Burlington.

More pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements are planned for Dorset Street, which otherwise has a 35 mph speed limit.

Crosswalk and lighting upgrades as well as paving from Aspen Drive to Kennedy Drive are slated to begin in the summer of 2025.

The South Burlington community was rocked two-and-a-half years ago when a freshman South Burlington High School student was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike near the school.

At the time, Joel Strout’s recovery was in question. Ultimately, he suffered a traumatic brain injury that has impacted his independence, according to updates from his mother, Alicia Moore, on their GoFund Me page.

While the Oct. 28, 2021, crash occurred outside of “school zone” hours, Dorset Street improvements are designed to increase safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike.
