CMS student dies unexpectedly

- By ABBEY LENNON

Calhoun Middle School student Jessica Raines, 13, was discovered unresponsive at her residence Sunday morning according to Gordon County Coroner, James Carver.

“EMS responded and brought her to Gordon Hospital where she was pronounced dead,” said Carver. “The medical examiner has completed an examination of the body to determine manner and cause of death, and results are pending. She had been very active in sports on Saturday, and she had participated in a ball game and was doing fine Saturday night when she went to bed. Total question mark of the whole situation.”

According to Gordon County Chief Deputy Sheriff Robert Paris, no suspicions are involved in Raines’ death. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” said Paris.

Raines was well known in the sports arena of softball and basketball, according to Calhoun City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor.

“The Jacket Family is saddened by the loss of Jessica Raines. Jessie was a talented student and gifted athlete who loved softball and basketball,” said Taylor. “She was full of life and loved by all. We will miss her dearly and our hearts go out to the family. Words cannot express how heartbroken we are. We know that the family appreciates the community’s support.”

CMS provided counselors from all Calhoun Schools for students on Monday, according to Calhoun City Schools Communications Director Peter Coombe.

“These services will continue to be offered throughout the week,“he said.

A fund has been set up at Greater Community Bank of Calhoun to help cover funeral expenses, according to Taylor.

“If you would like to contribute, please send to Greater Community Bank of Calhoun, c/o Jessica Raines Family, 305 West Belmont Drive, Calhoun, GA 30701,” said Taylor.
