Melitta Butler

Peggy Ann Cronan

Mrs. Peggy Ann Cronan, 70 of Ranger, died Friday, August 24, 2012 at Gordon Hospital following an extended illness.

Mrs. Cronan was born on May 3, 1942 in Marysville, Tenn., daughter of the late Paul and Mary Margaret Smith Harveston. She had retired from Shaw Industries, and was a member of Kings Highway Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Cronan of the home; a son, Marshall Cronan of Ranger; a sister, Mary Enis of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Ed Harveston and Junior Harveston, both of Marysville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Peggy Ann Cronan will be conducted Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. R.V. Stanley officiatin­g. Interment will follow the service in the White Graves Baptist Church Cemetery.

The Cronan family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributi­ons to the funeral home for funeral expenses.

Mrs. Melitta Butler, 65, of Calhoun, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Gordon Hospital following several months of declining health. She was born in Germany on March 31, 1947, and was preceded in death by a son, David Butler II; and a brother, Helmut Hagedorn.

Survivors include her husband, David C. Butler of the residence; two sons, Michael Butler and his wife Kari of Cartersvil­le, and Nathan Butler of Santa Rosa, N.M.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Russell Stripling of Claremore, Okla., and Nikki and Waylon McCray of Apache, Okla.; a daughter-in-law, Robin Lunsford; Marcus Hicks, who was like a son; and grandchild­ren, Rian, Keegan, Micah, Austin, Caylin, Bailey, Michael, Casey, Hannah Lunsford, Maverick Lunsford, and Zachary.

Memorial services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Melitta Butler were held Friday, Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Eddie Brannon officiatin­g.

The family received friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Friday from 1 p.m. until the service hour of 2 p.m.

Jessica Anne Raines

Jessica Anne Raines, 13 of Calhoun, Ga. passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012. She was born in Gordon County on February 2, 1999, daughter of Joshua and Julie Wilbanks Raines. She was preceded in death by grandparen­ts, Oscar and Wilma Wilbanks; and a great aunt, Edna Wilbanks.

Jessica was an 8th grade student at Calhoun Middle School. She was a member of the Beta Club, Girl Scout Troop 788, the 99 Chattanoog­a Warriors, Calhoun Middle School Band, CMS basketball and softball, formerly a member of the Calhoun Cobra Soccer Team, and other various recreation and all-star teams. She was a member of the Covenant Life Worship Center and the CLWC Youth Group.

Survivors include her parents, Josh and Julie Raines; two brothers, Jake Raines and Joey Raines; grandparen­ts, David and JoAnne Raines of Calhoun; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives.

Funeral services for Jessica Anne Raines will be held Thursday, August 30 at 4 p.m from the Trinity Baptist Church, 1170 Rome Rd SW, Calhoun, Interment will follow in the Sugar Valley Church of God Cemetery.

Active pallbearer­s will include Eddie Wint, Eddie Bethune, Chad Neighbors, Tony Wright, Leslie Knight, and Jeremy Hanrahan. Honorary pallbearer­s are members of the CMS softball and basketball teams, members of the Chattanoog­a Warriors 99 family, the CLWC Youth Group, and all other fellow athletes and friends.

The Raines family will receive friends at Trinity Baptist Church today from 3 until 9 p.m.

Thomas Herrin Bond, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 25 at his home here in Calhoun.

Tom was born on August 13, 1929 at home. His parents were Jean and Bill Bond. He had a brother, William who was born 13 months earlier.

He graduated from the Baylor School in Chattanoog­a. Mr. Bond then attended Emory University and graduated from The University of Georgia in 1951. He married Louise Fite on August 29, 1951 and served in United States Air force from 1951-1955. He began his career in banking with Citizens and Southerns Bank in Atlanta and remained with C & S for 25 years. In 1975 he and Louise moved back to Calhoun where he became President of The Gordon County Bank. He served in that position until 1987, when he retired from banking.

Mr. Bond served on the Calhoun City Council for 12 years and was an active member of the Industrial Developmen­t Authority. He was also a past president of the Chamber of Commerce. While serving in these positions he was instrument­al in getting the BB&T Bank to donate the property for the City Park. He worked to restore the Calhoun Depot and also worked hard to develop Fields Ferry Golf Course. While working with the Gordon County Historical Society, he helped them secure the purchase of Oakleigh. Tom also served on numerous bank boards, the hospital board at Gordon Hospital, and the board of the Red Cross. He was a lifelong member of the Calhoun First United Methodist Church.

Tom was an avid golfer and a huge University of Georgia football fan. He enjoyed eating breakfast with his friends at the Echota Smoke House. He loved the city of Calhoun and thought there was no better place to live.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Louise Fite Bond, one daughter Becky Bond Mathews and her husband William Mathews, two granddaugh­ters, Susan Mathews Rutland and her husband David Rutland, of Calhoun and Helen Bond Mathews of Washington D.C., two great grandchild­ren Catherine Louise Rutland and William Thomas Rutland also of Calhoun.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 30th 11 a.m. at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church. Visitation is to follow in the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Gordon County Historical Society. Thomas Funeral Home has charge of the arrangemen­ts.
