Gordon County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is recruiting new volunteers to serve as Child Advocates/Guardian Ad Litems for children involved in Juvenile Court deprivatio­n hearings. It is the goal of the program to have a CASA volunteer to advocate for the best interests of all abused or neglected children placed in foster care. Currently the local CASA program has seven volunteers and there are 141 Gordon County children in foster care. Adventa Hospice is looking for very special individual­s or groups who can visit hospice patients in homes or nursing homes. Activity volunteers support hospice patients through running errands, reading to the patient, sharing a devotional, playing board or card games, or just making friendly visits. The Calhoun Pregnancy Center Inc. offers free pregnancy tests and counseling regarding abortion, developmen­t of the baby, and sexual purity and also helps with maternity and baby clothes, diapers and baby care products, and even some baby furniture when available. The center is open Tuesday from noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Calhoun Pregnancy Center is a Christian ministry dedicated to the sanctity of all human life. The Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n maintains Caring Closets in several Northwest Georgia locations. Usually in stock are diapers in a variety of styles and sizes, wipes, creams, gloves, and bed pads especially for caregivers of those living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Caregivers may visit a Caring Closet location once a month to pick up above listed items free of charge. As the seasons change, so does the storage unit provided by the Adoptive and Foster Parent Associatio­n of Gordon County. This unit provides clothing, shoes, and personal items that children need and appreciate. Such items are clothing, shoes, toothpaste, toothbrush­es, hairbrushe­s, hair barrettes, shampoo, soap, socks, underwear, diapers, and pull-ups. Items of clothing for ages 6-14 in girls and boys, 6 months and up for boys, and items for teens are desperatel­y needed. Any donations would be appreciate­d. The Outreach Ministry takes all donations of clothes, furniture, appliances, miscellane­ous items, yard sale items, outside items, and more and helps needy families with these items. Call Pastor Evelyn Adams at

The youth group at First Presbyteri­an Church, Red Bud Road, wants to make a difference in the lives of at-risk children in the area. They are leading the community in PROD (Prevention and Relief of Domestic Violence) and will be collecting the listed items for victims of domestic violence. If you would like to donate, place any of the following items in the box in the Gathering Room of the church: cleaners, trash bags, trash cans, dish towels, toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, soap, deodorant, hair spray, razors, feminine care items, lotion, diapers, baby wipes, laundry detergent, aspirin, BandAids, children’s cold medication, Wal-Mart gas cards, McDonald’s gift certificat­es, etc., and canned items (such as soup, ravioli, etc.). “Thank you for your help,” a spokesman said.

Calhoun’s Friends of the Library, an organizati­on that supports the Calhoun-Gordon County Library, is making a plea to the public for donations of audiotapes. If you have audiotapes that you have heard and are willing to dispense with, it is requested that you donate them to the library. There is a supply of audiotapes on hand now, but the demand is great. Donations are taxdeducti­ble. Checkout is similar to checking out a book, except for shorter duration.
