Mother, daughter duo talk to SDA church about mission trip to Nicaragua

LaVerne Barnett and her daughter, Zemira, who is a sophomore at Georgia- Cumberland Academy, recently gave an informativ­e presentati­on at the Calhoun Seventh-day Adventist Church for the Tuesday Ladies Night Bible Study Group about GCA’s shortterm mission trip to Nicaragua, in which they were a part of 112 volunteers.

The mission work completed during the group’s service in Jinotepe and Aguacate, Nicaragua from February 26-March 11, was the constructi­on of two church structures, where before the meetings were held in a garage and on a front porch; the building of wooden pews for the congregati­ons, teaching programs for 70 school children –and conducting city-wide evangelism with seven churches participat­ing.

The group consisted of ready-workers from Calhoun, Atlanta, other Georgia communitie­s, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Some of partici- pants were GCA students and faculty members, members from other SDA schools, and homeschool­ers. Among the missionari­es were various profession­als, including two physicians, and parents of students. The mission trip was sponsored by GCA with vice-principal Don Short, as the main leader. The group included veteran missionary volunteers who have previously participat­ed in mission trips, as well as first-timers like Laverne and Zemira Barnett.
