LaVerne Barnett and her daughter, Zemira, who is a sophomore at Georgia- Cumberland Academy, recently gave an informative presentation at the Calhoun Seventh-day Adventist Church for the Tuesday Ladies Night Bible Study Group about GCA’s shortterm mission trip to Nicaragua, in which they were a part of 112 volunteers.
The mission work completed during the group’s service in Jinotepe and Aguacate, Nicaragua from February 26-March 11, was the construction of two church structures, where before the meetings were held in a garage and on a front porch; the building of wooden pews for the congregations, teaching programs for 70 school children –and conducting city-wide evangelism with seven churches participating.
The group consisted of ready-workers from Calhoun, Atlanta, other Georgia communities, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Some of partici- pants were GCA students and faculty members, members from other SDA schools, and homeschoolers. Among the missionaries were various professionals, including two physicians, and parents of students. The mission trip was sponsored by GCA with vice-principal Don Short, as the main leader. The group included veteran missionary volunteers who have previously participated in mission trips, as well as first-timers like Laverne and Zemira Barnett.
