Local among Shorter Honor Society officers
ROME — Shorter University’s Georgia Theta Chapter of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society welcomes six new officers who will represent the organization during the 2014-15 academic year.
Taylor Proctor, a senior early childhood education major from Calhoun, was named as a director.
Sarah Geil, of Kennesaw, will serve as president. Geil, who is a junior triple-majoring in psychology, English, and liberal arts with a concentration in history, said she looks forward to returning to The Hill this fall to continue working to achieve Alpha Chi’s motto of “making scholarship effective for good.”
“It is truly an honor to be a part of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, and I am humbled by the opportunity to lead,” she said. “I was blessed to attend and present at the Alpha Chi National Convention in St. Louis, and I learned how impactful this honor society is. Meeting brilliant scholars and leaders from universities around the country inspired ideas, and I am excited to work with my friends as we serve Shorter and Rome.”
Morgan Morris, a junior natural science major and chemistry minor from Snellville will serve as vice president. Isabella Baldacci, a junior interdisciplinary studies major from Norfolk, Neb., has been named secretary. Alexis Gorman, a junior Christian studies major from Fort Payne, Ala., will serve as the honor society’s treasurer. Emily Kendall, a senior early childhood education major from Summerville was also named a director.
“These ladies will help us continue our tradition of achieving Star Chapter status,” said Dr. Kathi Vosevich, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Alpha Chi faculty adviser. “Our chapter mission supports Shorter’s mission by promoting and honoring academic excellence and exemplary character, as well as providing learning opportunities for scholarship and leadership.”
The Georgia Theta Chapter of Alpha Chi has been awarded Star Chapter status for four years in a row. Just 43 of 329 chapters earned this status during the 2012-13 academic year, placing the Shorter University chapter in the top 13 percent. This award honors chapters for a number of criteria including inducting members locally, attending and presenting at the annual convention, nominating at least one representative for a national Alpha Chi fellowship or scholarship, and sponsoring on-campus programs that promote scholarship.
Alpha Chi students represent the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors academically across all disciplines.
