Calhoun City Schools Board of Education on Dec. 16 hosted a special reception to honor the outstandin­g contributi­ons of Col. Don Hood, chief financial officer of Calhoun City Schools.

Hood will be retiring at the conclusion of the semester and will be missed by all those who had the opportunit­y to work with him. He has faithfully served the school system through various stages of growth, with the culminatio­n of his career being the constructi­on of a new middle and high school complex.

Michele Taylor, superinten­dent, shared that Hood is a man of great character who complement­ed her leadership and was always willing to step up to the plate to turn dreams into reality.

Members of the city council, board of education, friends and family were in attendance to show their appreciati­on of Hood. Amy Atkinson, former BOE chair, summed it up when she said that she had not known a man with more integrity and dedication than Hood.

Current Chairman Eddie Reeves expressed the sincere appreciati­on of the Board of Education and wished Hood luck as he embarks on a new

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will offer FamilyTo-Family, a FREE, 12week course, that teaches biological nature of mental illness, treatment, and most importantl­y ways to support their loved one. Family-To-Family is for adult family members and caregivers of individual­s living with a mental illness such as bipolar disorder, schizophre­nia, anxiety disorders, and depression. The Red Bud Cardinal Alumni Associatio­n will meet on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Sonoravill­e Recreation Department. All Alumni of Red Bud Schools are encouraged to attend. Emergency Repair of Gas Furnaces and Gas Water Heaters: Low-income seniors, 65 and older, who own and live in their home, may be eligible for repairs help and assistance. Contact Bruce Walters, Tallatoona Community Action Partnershi­p, 770382-5388, ext. 106.

Additional funding has been allocated for the LIHEAP program that assists low-income residents with their heating bill, only those who have not received assistance with their heating bill. Only those who have not received assistance with their heating bill this program year, which started on November 1, 2013, are eligible to apply for assistance. The Gordon County Nutrition Site would like to invite seniors ages 60 and over to come to the senior center, located at 150 Cambridge Court Monday– Friday at 11:30 a.m. for a nutritious meal. The Rome Chapter 525 of The Military Order of the Purple Heart meets the first Monday of the month at the senior citizens center on the Kingston Hwy in Rome at 1900 hours. Anyone who has been awarded the Purple Heart is eligible for membership and is invited to attend the meeting and join the organizati­on. Georgia Toastmaste­rs is looking for past Toastmaste­rs living in the Calhoun-Dalton area who would be interested in helping us rebuild one of our clubs in the area. This area is ripe for a few Toastmaste­rs clubs and you can be part of the team that helps bring this to your community. The toastmaste­rs will have meetings beginning at 6:30 p.m. on every first and third Monday of every month at City of Calhoun Recreation Department, 601 South River St. Extension, Calhoun.
