Gordon Hospital presents Business Before Hours

- By Brandi Owczarz By Tonia Davis

Gordon County community, joined the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce’s Business Before Hours, hosted by Gordon Hospital, on Friday, Oct. 2.

The event was held as a grand opening for Gordon Hospital’s new patient tower and North Entrance. This includes a more direct route to visit the hospital’s inpatient areas, including the newest patient rooms and the Progressive Care Unit. It also expands the capacity of the Emergency Department, which opened in 2008.

The new addition also includes a new Intensive Care Unit, raising the ICU bed count from eight to 10 and a new Patient Care Unit that will house 24 beds.

“We come together in an event like this and it is all about community,” said Graves. “What we see here and what we experience today is a community that comes together and cares for one another, and loves one another, and is invested in the community.”

The hospital offered tours of the completed facility throughout the morning.

According to the Gordon Hospital website, the $37 million expansion project began in January 2014.

The Gordon County Ministerial Association will once again sponsor the 6th annual Gordon County Hunger Walk on Sunday, Nov. 1. The goal of this event is to raise money for the four food banks in the Calhoun area, to raise awareness of the local hunger and to help alleviate hunger for families in need. All businesses, civic organizations and individuals are invited to participate.

Churches of all denominations in the city of Calhoun and Gordon County will be working to help those in the community that are in need. In past years, this event has collected up to $2579 in donations each year; these funds stayed in the Gordon County and directly affected those in need within the community by being donated to the Voluntary Action Center, Blewer Food Bank, Seventh Day Adventist Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry at St. Clements.

Those walking are asked to make a donation or to ask sponsors to donate to their efforts. All donations should be turned in on the day of the walk and monetary donations are preferred, as the directors of the food banks are able to buy food at a discounted price not available to the public, allowing them to help more people with the donated money.

Rosellen Burns rep- resents her church, New Echota United Methodist Church, at the Ministerial Association meetings and spearheads the Hunger Walk. The Gordon County Ministerial Association is a group in which pastors from different faiths meet for encouragement and participate in community events.

“This walk helps to raise awareness about the needs in our community and allows different faiths in the community to work together on alleviating hunger in Gordon County,” said Burns. “Its not like other walks—this is just a laid back time for family to get out and walk together and to donate and help our food banks.”

The Hunger Walk will be held at the Calhoun Recreation Center beginning at 3 p.m. Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the pavilion near the playground and George Chambers Center.

The length of the walk will depend upon the ability of the walker and the amount of time they wish to spend on the walking trails. Sponsors hope that this will be a family event and encourage children, youth, adults and senior citizens to participate; the paved walk route is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.
