in Calhoun. Harlow, from Reinhart University, will speak to interested parties on various ways to get college scholarshi­ps. Did you know that if you are a Georgia resident aged 62 or older, you may be eligible to enroll in any of the 30 colleges and universiti­es in the University System of Georgia tuition free? Come learn about this and also different scholarshi­ps available for your children.

The American Legion will have a Fish Fry on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Post 47 on W. Line St. in Calhoun. Food will be ready at 12 noon and will last until all gone. Plates will consist of catfish, hush puppies, slaw and potato wedges. There will be a charge of $8 per plate. Proceeds will go toward the Gordon County Veteran Dinner on Nov. 14 at The National Guard Armory. 300 S. Wall St., Calhoun, GA 30701, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 20. The County Connection Program stations members of Graves’ staff in counties across the 14th District in order to provide a personal link to Congress for Georgians who may not be able to visit the permanent district offices in Dalton and Rome.

Calhoun-Gordon County Library will host a traveling exhibit from the Bandy Heritage Center entitled “Thread by Thread”. This particular exhibit features photograph­s from the Center’s Carpet and Rug Institute Collection demonstrat­ing how techniques used in the chenille bedspread industry were transferre­d to the manufactur­e of tufted carpet. The exhibit will be on display at the library from Oct. 19 to Nov. 30 during regular hours. During this time, the public is invited to come by the library and view the exhibit.

The Friends of the Library will host a book sale beginning Thursday, Oct. 22 through Saturday, Oct. 24 at the library, located at 100 N. Park Avenue in Calhoun. On Oct. 22 and 23, the sale will be from 1 - 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.. This is a great chance to get some great bargains and support your library!

The Calhoun Gordon County Library, located at 100 N. Park Avenue in Calhoun, will host Teen Night on Friday, Oct. 23, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. The workshop will be on creating Soda Tab Bracelets. This is a free program.

Sheriff Family Reunion at Odis Sheriff Farm to be held on Sunday Oct. 18. Lunch will begin around 1 p.m.

Elks Soccer Shoot to be held on Sunday, Oct. 18 beginning at 2 p.m. at the River Park Soccer Complex on Mauldin Road. The Soccer Shooting Competitio­n is open to children ages 6-13. Birthday as of Aug. 1, 2015. Competitio­n is free to anyone wanting to compete. There are both boys and girls divisions. Medals will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers. The champions in each age group will move on to the district competitio­n in Calhoun and a chance to go to our State Competitio­n held in Covington, Ga.

The Literacy Council will host an event for the Northwest Georgia Crisis Center on Monday, Oct. 25 from 4 – 5 p.m. in the Conference Room of the CalhounGor­don County Library, located at 100 N. Park Avenue in Calhoun. Gabby Hammontree from Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center will hold an orientatio­n class at the CalhounGor­don County Library for those interested in volunteeri­ng at the Crisis Center. The center is looking to build up their volunteer base and is especially looking for those that can share their individual talents. If scrapbooki­ng, manicures, yoga, nutrition or any specialize­d area is your thing and you would like to teach a class, please come to the orientatio­n class or you can call Gabby at 706-278-6595. There is also a need for volunteer female drivers, storytelle­rs, couponers, childcare workers, support group leaders and much more. This is a great way for our community to give back and offer hope to those who really need it.

On Friday, Oct. 30, the Calhoun-Gordon County Library will show a “Spooky” Family Movie, at 5 p.m. at the library, located at 100 N. Park Avenue in Calhoun. Dress up and get a treat!
