It’s been a tough first couple months of the season for the Gordon Central Warriors, and at this point, their goal is to simply show improvement in different areas of the game.
The Warriors (1-6, 1-4) will look to do that on Friday night when they welcome Murray County to Ratner Stadium for Homecoming.
Gordon Central is coming off a tough night on the road last Friday against Coahulla Creek as they could never really get anything going offensively in the first half, and even when a drive started to materialize in the second half, something would go wrong or it would just stall out.
They also had to bat- tle the weather as they game was delayed for over an hour due to lightning in the area.
Gordon Central trailed 9-0 at the half, and then struggled in the third quarter as Coahulla Creek forced two Warrior safeties. The Colts then added two touchdown passes to make the final 26-0.
This Friday welcomes a new opportunity for the Warriors as they host a Murray County (3-3, 2-2) team that has had some struggles themselves this season and over the past few seasons. They have shown improvement, winning three games, which is already one more than their win total last season.
The Gordon Central rushing game will be counted on heavily to move the chains and control the clock. The Warriors’ Branson Towe has been the most consistent threat the team has had this season offensively, leading the team in rushing as a sophomore.
Sophomore quarterback Martavius Harris should have some opportunities in the passing game as well on Friday as Murray County has allowed several quarterbacks this season to have big nights against their young defense.
Gordon Central has also had to battle the injury bug over the past several weeks as many key contributors on both sides of the ball have gone down. Those injuries puts a strain on an already thin roster with just under 40 dressing out for the varsity team.
Homecoming is always a big night so the Warriors should be motivated to defend their home field. However, Murray County leads the all-time series 9-4, including winning the past two contests against Gordon Central, 20-14 in 2014 and 14-12 in 2013.
Gordon Central will be looking to break that mini win streak against the Indians and show progress in the program with a win to double their total from last season.
Prediction:
The Warriors need a win and need it bad. They haven’t been able to string together a lot of consistency in any phase of the game so far this season, and Murray County will not be easy to do that against on Friday.
Losing on Homecoming is not a fun thing so the Warriors’ players will do everything in their power to not allow that to happen.
Murray County wins, 28-19.
