Calhoun City Schools’ announces 2017-2018 Teachers of the Year

Calhoun Primary School is proud to announce that Mrs. Missy Wright has been named “Teacher of the Year” for 2017- 18.

Mrs. Wright works as a first grade teacher and has been a member of the CPS faculty since 2008. Mrs. Wright is incredibly dedicated to her craft and provides wonderful instructio­n that is tailored to the individual needs of each of the students in her care. Parents often rave about just how well Mrs. Wright gets to know their children on a personal level. That drive to know the boys and girls so well translates to the optimal learning atmosphere, as the boys and girls receive exactly what they need academical­ly, while also having a strong sense of being loved and supported.

Wright has served on several important committees in the school, including grade level chair, special events, school events and lesson plan/ unit writing. Mrs. Wright is a behind the scenes leader and has worked tirelessly to create a lot of valuable reading units and resources. She is quick to share with others. Everyone that works with Wright appreciate­s and respects what she does immensely. Said one colleague of Mrs. Wright for this honor, “Missy is the poster child for this profes- sion. She loves the children with all of her heart and works each day to bring out the very best in each student. She loves every student like they were her very own.”

Calhoun Primary School is so proud of Mrs. Missy Wright, and we know that students are constantly benefiting from her dedication.

Calhoun Elementary School is delighted to announce Mrs. Shelly West as “Teacher of the Year” for 2017- 18.

Mrs. West serves as a third grade math and science teacher, and has also served on several vital committees within the school including the leadership team, grade level chair, SACS accreditat­ion team, as a mentor for our young and developing faculty members, and as a co-faculty sponsor for the CES chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) student organizati­on.

In recent years, West has also been involved with the PAGE (Profession­al Associatio­n of Georgia Educators) High School Redesign Initiative focused on cultivatin­g and developing student engagement. She is always looking for ways to keep her classroom on the cutting edge of best practices for all learners. Mrs. West is highly respected by all of her colleagues, students, and their parents. Everyone knows how passionate she is about what she does, and it is evidenced the moment one enters Shelly’s classroom. The environmen­t is highly structured and organized, but the atmosphere is perfect for students to also feel loved and supported. The respect Mrs. West has from her colleagues is relayed by one who shared, “Shelly is one of the most dedicated educators I have ever known. She is always willing to help others and she gives 100 percent with everything she does.” Calhoun Elementary is very proud of Mrs. Shelly West and we know that her students exponentia­lly benefit each day from her efforts.

Calhoun Middle School is excited to announce Mr. Jule Medders as “Teacher of the Year” for 2017-2018.

Mr. Medders is an eighth grade social studies teacher who engages students with authentic learning opportunit­ies. Medders is a leader in the school who is highly respected by everyone. His peer teachers shared compliment­s such as “Jule would make an excellent choice for TOTY because he embodies our mission as a lifelong learner. Our school is blessed to have him. He is a wonderful teacher as he incorporat­es his talents and hobbies into his instructio­n creating lifelong connection­s. He is a legend.”

Mr. Medders is a wonderful representa­tive of Calhoun Middle School and we are extremely proud that he is being honored for his many years of hard work and dedication to his students. Congratula­tions to the CMS Teacher of the Year…Mr. Jule Medders!

Calhoun High School is thrilled to announce Mrs. Christina Long as “Teacher of the Year” for 2017-2018.

Mrs. Long teaches physical science, physics and chemistry. She also serves as chair of the science department. She is a leader in the school who is highly respected by everyone. She works hard to engage all students.

Her peer teachers have shared compliment­s such as “...she works incredibly hard to challenge her kids! She inspires and engages her students! She will often have students contact her and say things like ‘I got an A in college chemistry because of what I learned in your class.’ She is an amazing teacher with the ability to teach some of the most difficult informatio­n to students and not only have them enjoy and learn it, but retain it as well.”

Mrs. Long is a wonderful representa­tive of Calhoun High School and we are very proud that she is being honored for her hard work, compassion, and dedication. Congratula­tions to the CHS Teacher of the Year... Mrs. Christina Long!
