HAC to offer Makeup and Special Effects classes

Make- up artist Cristie Whiles will teach a series of Theater Make- up and Special Effects Classes at the Harris Arts Center beginning Sept. 17. Actors, artists, and anyone interested in performanc­e make-up, will learn the foundation­s of theater make- up using industry standard processes. Each class will create one character make-up from beginning to end, including demonstrat­ions and one- on- one critiques. At the completion of each workshop, students will be offered an optional supply kit order form to further their theater and make-up pursuits.

“Please open up to bringing your creativity and ambition to the theater makeup and FX classes. Your imaginatio­n is immeasurab­le,” said Cristie.

Classes in the series are:

Basic Stage Make-up: learn the foundation­s of stage make-up applicatio­n and removal and how to build a makeup FX portfolio.Course will consist of lectures, demonstrat­ions, and hands- on learning. Student Make-up kit & basic applicatio­n tools included. Additional supply list provided upon registrati­on. $ 65 HAC Members, $75 Not Yet Members. Old Age Make- up: learn to create hyperreali­stic aging effects beginning with aging anatomy fundamenta­ls. Learn how to properly use stretch and stipple techniques with advanced materials used by FX masters. Class includes aging FX products, and applicatio­n tools. Latex products will be used. Additional supply list provided upon registrati­on. $ 65 HAC Members, $75 Not Yet Members. $20 Make-up Kit fee (not required to attend class). Creating and Applying a Bald Cap: A store- bought, nonfitted bald cap can be costly, fragile and time consuming. Learn how to create a custom fitted bald cap within a few hours at a fraction of the retail price. Learn the proper techniques used in rubber appliance and create your own PAX paint. Designed for all skill levels – no prior experience required. Bring a model on which to create and apply bald cap. Latex products will be used. Beard and Hair Laying: Learn how to properly lay hair to create realistic beards, brows and other styles of facial hair and hairlines. Beginning with crepe hair preparatio­n and hair color mixing techniques, learn how to apply a believable hairline. Character Make- up: learn the profession­al process to design and create special effects make-up for film, theater, media and fun, from concept to completion. Learn theatrical make-up fundamenta­ls, 2D make-up techniques, and “out of the kit” 3D constructi­on make-ups used by effects masters in the industry. Class includes 3D make-up kit and applicatio­n tools. Additional supply list provided upon registrati­on. After graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Cristie Whiles became a make- up artist for a traveling haunted ship, “The U. S. S. Nightmare.”While working on the ship, her skills were recognized by a teacher at the Tom Savini School of Special Effects. This associatio­n helped Cristie become the Special Effects studio manager at a local film company. She built her team and credibilit­y, working on films across the U. S. and other countries, including Santo Domingo, where her crew was the first SPFX company to film in the Dominican Republic.Whiles worked alongside icons such as Tom Savini, Gregory Nicotero, George Romero and Clive Barker. Her casts and sculptures may be viewed at the Polar Bear, Fresh Market exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo.
