The Gordon Central Lady Warriors got two runs in the first inning on Thursday, and that would prove to be enough behind the strong pitching of Destiny Parker.

The Lady Warriors defeated Coosa 2-1 on the road in a Region 7-AA matchup thanks in large part to a completega­me effort in the circle by Parker. She went all seven innings and gave up just one run on four hits while striking out eight.

Parker also had two hits at the plate, including a double, and drove in one of the Lady Warriors’ two runs. Mackenzie Hall drove in the other, and Sam Jordan and Morgan Frank each had a hit and a run scored apiece. Frank’s hit was a double for Gordon Central (1-2, 1-2). In other recent prep sports action:

SOFTBALL Calhoun goes 3-0 at LFO Tournament

The Lady Jackets traveled to Jack Mattox Park on Saturday to play in the LFO Tournament and came away with three impressive wins.

Calhoun (8-0) defeated Marist in their first game of the day 3-1, and then followed that up with an 8-0 victory over Harris County and an 8-1 win over Coahulla Creek.

Leading the way against Marist was Kayla Watson, who pitched six innings for the win by giving up just one run on five hits while striking out two. Maddie Clay led the offense with three hits, including a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Allie Jones and Chloe Rice each had a hit and an RBI apiece, and Jana Johns added a double and a run scored.

Against Harris County, Torri Gaddis pitched a shutout in the mercy-rule shortened win that went just five innings. She gave up just three hits and struck out four. Ashlyn Barnes was 3-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Ryan Brzozoski and Cassie Henderson both had a double and two RBIs, Johns had a hit and two RBIs and Carlie Henderson had two hits and a run scored. Maddie Bumgardner and Rice also had two hits apiece.

In the Lady Jackets’ final game of the day against Coahulla Creek, Brzozoski had a big game at the plate with three hits, including a double and a triple, with four RBIs and a run scored. Allie Jones had three hits, Alaina Reece had a triple and two RBIs, Cassie Henderson had two hits and an RBI, Barnes had two hits and two runs scored, Clay added a double among two hits, Bumgardner drove in a run on a double and Johns had a triple. Watson earned the win by pitching four innings of shutout ball and giving up four hits, and Gaddis pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out one.

Sonoravill­e, GC compete at Lady Cat Classic

Both the Lady Phoenix and Lady Warriors traveled to Heritage Point Park in Dalton on Saturday to compete in the Lady Cat Classic, and both came away with mixed results.

Sonoravill­e (4-3) went 1-2 at the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Ridgeland, a 2-1 win over Christian Heritage and an 8-3 loss to Chattooga.

The Lady Warriors finished going 0-2-1 with a 7-7 tie against Murray County followed by losses to Northwest Whitfield, 9-0, and Trion, 52. Against the Lady Indians, Mackenzie Hall had a homer and two runs scored, Sidney Taylor had a hit and two RBIs, Sam Jordan, Destiny Parker and Morgan Frank all had a hit and an RBI apiece and Kaige Hegarty added a double and a run scored.

In the the game against Northwest Whitfield, only three Gordon Central (1-4-1) players recorded a hit, including Frank with a double. Hall and Cara Crump also had a hit. In the finale vs. Trion, Hall hit another homer and had two RBIs.

The Lady Phoenix host Bremen on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.; Gordon Central visits Armuchee at 5 p.m.
