Calhoun Church of Christ welcomes Jon Mitchell as new minister

Calhoun Church of Christ, located at 1301 Dews Pond Road in Calhoun, recently welcomed Jon Mitchell as the new minister of the church.

Mitchell has been in ministry for 17 years; the previous 10 years he served at a church in Duncan, S. C.

Born in Nashville, Tenn., Mitchell was the son of a minister and moved around much of his childhood. “My childhood was spent in Nashville and Henderson, Ky.,” said Mitchell. “But most of my childhood was spent in Belleville, Illinois, right outside of St. Louis.”

After high school, Mitchell attended Harding University, a private Christian college associated with Church’s of Christ located in Searcy, Arkansas. After earning a degree in History, Mitchell moved back to Belleville and began preaching at the Belleville Church of Christ, where he ministered for four years. While preaching in Belleville, he married his childhood friend, Beth, and they moved to Columbia, S. C., where Mitchell worked in ministry for two years before moving to Duncan.

The Mitchell’s have two young daughters, five- year- old Katie and two- year- old Ashlynn. Both of the girls attend the Calhoun Church of Christ school on the church campus, just as their dad attended the church school on his dad’s church campus as a child. “One of my earliest memories was being Katie’s age and sneaking out of my class and running up the hallway to where my dad’s office was and sitting in his lap,” said Mitchell. “Now, I get to have lunch with the girls.
